The Memoir

A "dungeon of blame and shame" is no place for a teenage girl to reside with the devastating effects of rape and molestation.

How could young Della have possibly distinguished between the trust and desire she felt for a family friend twice her age and the predatory grooming process by which he would lock up her heart for decades marked by loathsome self-sabotage?

Almost Della chronicles the true story of grooming, molestation and rape from the perspective of a 15-year-old girl, and how it affected her life for three decades to follow. She told no one about her abuse until age 45. Her toxic shame molded her adult life by creating a recurring pattern of choosing abusive and unavailable men. Her emotional pain manifested in severe anxiety attacks, depression, hives and suicidal thoughts. She learned to "cope" by abusing alcohol and drugs. Only through years of recovery and therapy was she able to release her inner child from her dungeon of condemnation and begin to cultivate a love for herself.

Della hopes that her book encourages victims of rape and incest to release their shame and become survivors.

The Author

Author Della Barbato dared revisit the tear-stained pages of her diary, where her younger self spent hours and years turned decades attempting to make sense of the devastating effects of molestation and rape she'd barely recognized as victimization.

With her debut book, ... Almost Della: From Sexual Abuse to Survivor, Barbato aims to illuminate the darkness and help lead other victims of sexual abuse away from the pain, self-loathing and destructive behavior to which so many succumb.
